Engineering Interact: Sound

Students help to free Mel, the mermaid, from the evil Sea Serpent Through the science of sound, loudness and pitch, kids solve problems in this flash-based game. When they’ve completed the modules and correctly answered all the questions, they will free the mermaid

Animations illustrate sources of sound, how it travels in waves, and how it is engineered into inventions such as musical instruments. Kids learn how different types of medium – solids, liquids, gases – are used to carry sound and how the mediums affects loudness of sound. They learn about the amplitude of sound waves, measured in decibels, and its relationship to loudness. Finally, kids explore the frequency of sound waves and its relationship to pitch, measured in Hertz.

This interactive has many written instructions and questions. Because of that, it is best suited to upper elementary students.
